Dream Centers are resource centers and safe spaces for undocumented, immigrant and marginalized students and families in LA public schools. Urban Visionaries is part of the Dream Allies Network, a collaborative between National Education Association (NEA), United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), Alhambra Teachers Association (ATA), VISA Boosters & Asian Youth Center. We support LAUSD Dream Centers through volunteers, donations and programming. We collaborate with our sister organization Voice of Immigrant Students of Alhambra (VISA) in the Alhambra Unified School District to fundraise and support Dream Centers in both public school districts.
Urban Visionaries supports environmental justice projects in Los Angeles area connected to low income schools of color. In collaboration with our partner Parent Pioneers we do school gardens, environmental family programs and programs to reduce plastic pollution. You can also join us at the HOPE Garden which is part of Valley Oaks Center for Enriched Studies, an LAUSD middle school and high school located in Sun Valley and the People's Garden which is part of Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno. Community members are welcome to volunteer, donate and gather to build sustainable communities!
Urban Visionaries facilitates Transformative & Restorative Justice Programs that empower at-risk/ at-promise youth at four LAUSD Community Schools. Our TJ/RJ programs have 4 main components: 1) TJ Healing Dialogue Circles based on a culturally relevant Indigenous/ Native framework; 2) Arts & cultural workshops; 3) An after school program which focuses on the root systemic causes of community violence and substance abuse and where students will develop leadership and community organizing skills and 4) Low to no cost Restorative Justice Salary Point class utilizing culturally relevant curriculum for educators. Student leaders, parents, teachers and community stakeholders will develop a school-wide Restorative Justice plan.
Urban Visionaries provides free to low cost art & culture workshops to LA area public schools and communities. We partner with local artists and community scholars to provide workshops that promote knowledge and understanding of traditional cultures with an emphasis on Indigenous, Asian and non-Western cultures. We also train youth, parent and educators to engage in community advocacy on the most pressing issues facing low income communities of color in Los Angeles including affordable housing and homelessness, environmental justice, educational justice and immigrants rights.
Our internship programs are designed to provide youth with opportunities and mentorship to become community leaders and servants. Our scholarship program was founded in honor of Dr. Warren Furumoto. It provides scholarships to low income undocumented, immigrant, and at-risk/ high potential youth in LA County.
Urban Visionaries partners with Reclaim Our Schools Los Angeles, Asian Youth Center and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) to conduct the Community Action Research Program (CARP) which is a weeklong summer training. It trains youth and teachers from LAUSD and AUSD schools to conduct Participatory Action Research Projects on critical issues in their schools and communities.
